Sony recently released a bunch of slim profile cameras with mega-pixels up to 12. The quality of the picture is incredible.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money this Christmas on a video camcorder, you can get yourself a Digital Still Camera that has a recording feature. The quality won't be as good as Camcorder but it's pretty good.

DVX100 by Panasonic

The DVX100 by Panasonic is a pretty good camera for people starting out in the film industry. The recording quality if pretty good and comparable to pro cameras.

It is still a little expensive but compared to others you can buy I should it is very affordable.
